The final 3FC event is part of a huge two-day weekend. Let's get right to the picks.
VALOR 128 LB CHAMPIONSHIP: ACE SAMPLES (1-0, DORO MMA/ATHENS, GA) VS JOSHUA CHAMBERS (2-0, GEORGETOWN MMA/GEORGETOWN, KY)
Both of these guys are very good, but I’m going to with Chambers in this one. Joshua Chambers wins by unanimous decision.
VALOR 194 LB CHAMPIONSHIP: KYLE WRIGHT (4-2 (1), UPPER CUMBERLAND MMA/COOKEVILLE, TN) VS SID WHEELER (5-0 (4), BLALOCK'S IMB/CHATTANOOGA, TN)
A lot of heavy leather will be traded in this one. I’m going with Wheeler to stay undefeated by round 2 TKO.
VALOR 159 LB CHAMPIONSHIP: NICK "HAYMAKER" BAKER (5-5 (2), NEWPORT COMBAT CLUB/NEWPORT, TN) VS BRANDON METCALF (3-3 (3), TEAM METCALF/KNOXVILLE, TN)
Baker already lost one title match at Valor, will he make it two in a row? Metcalf has been in six very tough kickboxing matches in his career. I’m going with Baker in this one. Nick Baker wins by unanimous decision.
175 LB MMA: CALEB CUPP (2-0, D-EVIL MMA/JOHNSON CITY, TN) VS "CRIPPLER" CHRIS ADKINS (2-2, BACKWOODS MMA/WISE, VA)
I’m going to go ahead and just get to it. Upset special of the weekend. Chris Adkins does not gas out and beats Caleb Cupp by round 2 TKO.
KICKBOXING 172 LBS (JUNIORS)
"THE TOOTH FAIRY" DALTON MORRELL (1-1, STRYKER MMA/BRISTOL, VA) VS JJ WINDHORST (DEBUT, TEAM KOTONA/PIGEON FORGE, TN)
I’m feeling the tooth fairy will walk away happy in this fight. Dalton Morrell wins by unanimous decision.
BUCK YATES (DEBUT, OGLE'S MARTIAL ARTS/MADISONVILLE, TN) VS JUSTIN DAY (0-1, DEATH GRIP MMA/JOHNSON CITY, TN)
Justin Day had a tough outing in his first fight with Dylan O’ Sullivan, but I feel he may be more evenly matched in this one. I’m going to go with Bucky Yates despite not having experience. Bucky Yates wins by TKO in round 2.
LIGHTWEIGHT: "THE BOSNIAN BARNCAT" DAMIR FERHATBEGOVIC (1-0, SHIELD SYSTEMS/KNOXVILLE, TN) VS LAWRENCE BUCK (DEBUT, FORCE MMA/LEXINGTON, SC)
I’m sorry but when a guy named the Bosnian Barncat fights a debut fighter, you have to go with the Barncat. Damir Ferhatbegovic wins by TKO round 1.
MIDDLEWEIGHT: ALAN STEWART (2-1, KMAA/KNOXVILLE, TN) VS TODD STEELE (2-3, COPELAND'S MARTIAL ARTS/HUNTLAND, TN)
Alan Stewart has been three rounds before, and I couldn’t find much information on Steele. I’m going to with KMAA and Stewart in this one. Alan Stewart wins by submission round 1.
CATCHWEIGHT (275 LBS): MICHAEL "BEDROCK" SNAPP (3-3, NEWPORT COMBAT CLUB/NEWPORT, TN) VS MATT TALLENT (2-1, OGLE'S MARTIAL ARTS/MADISONVILLE, TN)
Michael Snapp is looking to end the losing streak, and Matt Talent is coming off a loss to Keriden Hamilton who is no slouch. Both of these guys know what victory tastes like, but Snapp will want it more. Michael Snapp wins by round 1 TKO.
HEAVYWEIGHT: GARY CALDWELL (1-0, FIT FACTORY/SEVIERVILLE, TN) VS MICHAEL REDMOND (3-2, TEAM HOEDOWN/BUFORD, GA)
Caldwell had it easy in his first fight, but I believe Redmond will put up a bit of a fight. Redmond has two wins by submission, but I don’t see him submitting Caldwell. Caldwell wins by submission himself in round 2.
LIGHT HEAVYWEIGHT: DONNIE MASHBURN (4-0, KMAA/PIGEON FORGE, TN) VS BROCK WALKER (2-1, INDEPENDENT/GATLINBURG, TN)
I thought Mashburn was done giving us big finishes, but lucky for us I guess he isn’t. Mashburn wins by highlight reel KO in round 1. KO of the night.
3FC BANTAMWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP (135 LBS): JONATHAN "SUNSHINE" PEARCE (4-1, D-EVIL MMA/JOHNSON CITY, TN) VS DAVID LEWIS (2-2, NORTH GEORGIA HAYASTAN/DALTON, GA)
There’s never a boring minute when Jonathan Pearce is in the cage. Lewis is coming off of two losses, but will be a bit of challenge for Pearce. Both guys are good wrestlers, but I believe Pearce may be better. Sunshine wins by TKO round 2.
3FC FEATHERWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP (145 LBS): JAMAL MOHAMMED (3-0, FOUR SEASONS/LEXINGTON, KY) VS RUSSELL JOHNSON (6-1, VICTORY MMA/COOKEVILLE, TN)
Mohammed is fresh off a guillotine victory over Bo Preece and will look to keep the momentum going by winning 3FC gold. Johnson is a very tall 145 pound fighter with a good record. Although Mohammed doesn’t have as much experience, I believe the fact he trains at Four Seasons gets him the title win. Mohammed wins by submission in round 2.
3FC LIGHTWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP (155 LBS): AYRON "THE HURRICANE" DAVIS (8-4, TEAM DECIMATION/WYTHEVILLE, VA) VS KYLE "FREERANGE" JONES (3-0-1, TEAM LUDUS/JOHNSON CITY, TN)
Both fighters are coming into this fight off a win. Although Jones is the favorite in this one, Davis has been in the cage with some tough competition including myself and has shown that he can win with submission if need be. If both guys decide to stand, this could be a barnburner. I’m going to say this will be fight of the night on the amateur side. Jones gets the victory in the end. Jones wins by unanimous decision.
3FC MIDDLEWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP (185 LBS): TIMMY EISENBRAUN (4-2, UPPER CUMBERLAND MMA/COOKEVILLE, TN) (C) VS MATTHEW FOLEY (4-0, FOUR SEASONS/LEXINGTON, KY)
This could be another contender for fight of the night. Eisenbraun has faced stiff competition, but Foley brings a very solid record into the cage. Will Four Seasons continue a sweep of East Tennessee? I don’t think so. Eisenbraun finds a way to win. Eisenbraun wins by submission in round 2.
3FC HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP (265 LBS): JARRETT "BEAR" SLAUGHTER (3-1, NORTH GEORGIA HAYASTAN/DALTON, GA) VS BRIAN MEEKS (10-2, COPELAND'S MARTIAL ARTS/HUNTLAND, TN)
Now that I think about it, all of these title fights are pretty darn good matchups. Slaughter had a war with Snapp, and Meeks is coming off a victory over Pete Pirtle, who was a very strong competitor at a prior 3FC event. Despite Meeks having 10 wins, I feel Slaughter has definitely been tested in his four fights. If this fight goes into the second or third I would take Slaughter. However I feel Meeks will get the TKO early. Meeks wins by TKO round 1.
BANTAMWEIGHT (135 LBS) PRO: KODEY "JUICEBOX" GULLEY (DEBUT, BLACKEYE MMA/ASHEVILLE, NC) VS BRANDON MCMAHAN (1-2, HARD KNOX/KNOXVILLE, TN
McMahan is coming off a loss while Gulley will be making his debut. Gulley is coming off a streak of wins that includes decsions over Tyler Hunley and Josh Carter. Although this is Gulley's first pro fight, I feel he will weather the storm of an early start by McMahan. Gulley wins by submission in round 2.
CO-MAIN EVENT, BANTAMWEIGHT (135 LBS) PRO: "SUPA QUE DA KING" CHRIS WRIGHT (8-3-1, KMAA/KNOXVILLE, TN) VS ANTHONY "THE SPOILER" MORGAN (4-2, FIT FACTORY/SEVIERVILLE, TN)
This may be one of the best matched fights I have ever seen in this area. Chris Wright will be looking to turn around a bad performance in his last fight by returning to his original weight class of 135. Morgan is coming off a win against Adam Mays a few weeks ago at 155. Morgan has been known as the spoiler, but this go around it will be Wright looking to spoil Morgan in his hometown. I think what will be more interesting than the fight in the cage will be the fight going on in training camps between two great coaching minds. These guys and their coaches know each other well, and it will be interesting to see how game plans work out. I’m going out on a limb on this one. I like Anthony Morgan as a person and a fighter, but he strikes me as the type of guy who could care less who I pick to win this fight. Morgan’s conditioning was straight phenomenal in his last fight, but I feel the 145 or 155 division may be better for Morgan overall. Chris Wright wins by split decision in what may turn out to be fight of the year.
MAIN EVENT, CATCHWEIGHT (150 LBS): "PRIMETIME" ADAM TOWNSEND (5-2, D-EVIL MMA/JOHNSON CITY, TN) VS SHANE "THE GODFATHER" CRENSHAW (6-3, BODYQUEST MMA/GASTONIA, NC)
Crenshaw is coming off two losses, but one of those came in a Bellator cage. Adam Townsend is coming off a loss as well, but was far away from his home turf. Crenshaw has fought several tough competitors, but seems to come out on the losing side in big contests. Crenshaw also, from what I remember at XFC in Charlotte, seems to be more of a wrestler than striker. I feel Townsend started out as a wrestler, but has really developed his striking skills. Townsend gets the win at 3FC always. Townsend wins by TKO round 2.
